Azerbaijani NGOs held a briefing on the negative impact of exploitating gold deposit in Armenia

The Environmental Protection First Coalition held a conference for media about the negative effects of the exploitation of the Amuldagh gold field on the environment and the ecology of the region countries, APA reports.

Amin Mammadov, the chair of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, reminded that, in June of last year, information was circulated about the construction of a metallurgical plant in Arazdayan, a historical territory of Azerbaijan which is located on the territory of Armenia. He said that, civil society bodies in Azerbaijan, especially a number of non-governmental organizations operating in the field of environmental protection and ecology, have issued a statement regarding the construction of the plant.

The main purpose of that statement was to call on Armenia to adhere to the conventions it has joined at the international level, especially environmental assessment in the transboundary context, the requirements of the ESPO convention.

"After that, an open letter was addressed to the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, on behalf of the non-governmental organizations representing the civil society of Azerbaijan. We For the sake of justice, we thank our colleagues from Armenia for voting for us," the statement reads.
