Among the CIS countries, the number of pensioners has decreased the most in Azerbaijan - List

7 years ago - at the beginning of 2018, there were 1 million 318 thousand pensioners in Azerbaijan. After 7 years - at the beginning of 2024, the number of pensioners decreased to 1 million 96 thousand people.
Yeniavaz.com reports with reference to official data, over the past 7 years, the number of pensioners has decreased by 222 thousand, or 16.8%.
Since the population of Azerbaijan has increased over the past 7 years, the number of pensioners per 1000 people has decreased. Thus, at the beginning of 2018, the number of pensioners per 1000 people in the country was 135. At the beginning of 2024, this figure dropped to 108. As a result, the number of pensioners per 1000 people has decreased by 20% over the past 7 years. For comparison, let us say that over the past 7 years, the number of pensioners in Azerbaijan has decreased the most among most countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
According to information released by the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, 7 years ago - in 2018, there were 458 thousand pensioners in Armenia, and over the past 7 years their number has increased by 18 thousand to 476 thousand. The number of pensioners per 1000 people in Armenia has increased from 154 to 160 over the past 7 years.
In the CIS countries, the number of pensioners per 1000 people is as follows:

Expert economist Allahverdi Aydin associates the greater reduction in the number of pensioners in Azerbaijan compared to the CIS countries with the increase in the retirement age.
He told Yeniavaz.com that in no other CIS country is the retirement age as high as in Azerbaijan:
“As you know, since July 1, the retirement age in Azerbaijan for men is 65 years, for women - 64 years. This means that the average retirement age in Azerbaijan is 64.5 years. After the appointment of Sahil Babayev as minister, the retirement age has been constantly increasing. In 2018, when Babayev was appointed minister, the average retirement age in Azerbaijan was 62.1 years. Due to the increase in the retirement age over the past 7 years, the number of working pensioners has also sharply decreased. If in 2018 there were 390 thousand labor pensioners, then by the beginning of this year this figure dropped to 259 thousand people. The decrease will be about 33%. This is the reason for the decrease in the total number of pensioners.

Allahverdi Aydin

The expert says that among the CIS countries, after Azerbaijan, Armenia has the highest retirement age:
“The average retirement age in Armenia is 63 years. This is 1.5 years less than in Azerbaijan. The retirement age in Russia and Belarus is 60.5 years, in Kazakhstan – 62 years, in Turkmenistan – 59.5 years.”
